2020 Art Goals

It’s never a bad idea to write down your goals, and when your do it publicly there’s a little added pressure. As 2019 comes to an end, I’m thinking about all of the things I accomplished. More importantly, I’m thinking about all of the things I haven’t yet accomplished. As I get older and mature and start to become familiar with what I want from life, the list of things I want to do is just getting longer. I want to be in a completely different place this time next year, and since I’m so far from the person I was around Christmas 2018, I feel pretty confident that I can continue to move towards the Krissy I want to be.
Here’s a collection of my art related goals for 2020.
I want to get really good at making prints at home. It seems like it would be a lot easier to pay a company to print them for me, and honestly that might be what I end up doing. I don’t hate the idea of high quality prints of my paintings. The biggest reason I want to make my own lies in the funds spent on my Epson WF 7720 inkjet printer. I have spent lots of money and lots of time trying to figure the thing out, but honestly I still have a lot to learn and I think it’s possible to create beautiful prints on my own. Of course, I’m limited to the sizes I can create so if I want anything larger than tabloid sized paper I’ll need to order the prints from a printing company. I guess that makes my #1 goal 2 separate goals. Learn to print at home, and find a company I like to make large prints of my work.
Make tons of work. I don’t feel like I’ve created a ton of work this year. Lots of doodles and a few paintings, but my inventory is still so small. I’ve been working a different job where I sit at a desk until 5pm, so I’m not sure how much that has affected my productivity. I want to make tons of jackets, totes, canvas paintings, drawings, watercolors, all of it. That leads into my next goal.
Make wearable art. I already paint on canvas and jean jackets and canvas totes are so similar in texture, and I’ve loved every wearable piece I’ve done so far. By the end of 2020 I want to have painted at least 20 jackets and 20 totes (I’m counting on you 2020 Krissy).
I’d like to master Instagram. By that I mean I’d like to master the algorithm but also that I’d like to be better about posting. I want to consciously think about the times, the content, and my audience. Currently my art Instagram works as a large portfolio, and is my second try at an art account. I think I’d like to be ahead of the game, and use applications that post for me. I know some instagrams have themes, and I’d like to have my theme figured out by the end of the upcoming year. (blog idea #2465)
Make $200 extra dollars a month from my hobby. This is a big one. In January I’ll be leaving my quaint little (affordable) apartment to move into something a little more comfortable for me and my animals. My rent is changing, but my salary is not. It might seem silly to move into something more difficult to afford, but the space comes with a second bedroom that will become my studio, and I have faith that having my own studio is going to be a game changer.
Spend at least 20 hours a week in my studio. This is steep, and it’s going to be a challenge, but it won’t be the first time I’ve worked 60 hours a week. That’s 3 hours a day if I want to spread it out, and I normally spend my weekends working on art as it is. With this goal comes keeping track of my time which is one of the first steps to making a transition into the professional world. I’m excited to challenge myself this way. If I’m going to be my own boss, I have to be on top of my progress and work. (I’m also going to blog about setting up my studio so that will be a ton of fun, pictures and all!)
Find balance with strictness. I know it’s going to be hard to get started on all of these goals, so my final publicly announced goal is obtaining a perfect schedule. I’m giving myself an entire year to try and fail and try and fail again. I’ll need to learn how lenient I can be with myself.
So anyways, I hope this inspires you to write down your goals for 2020. 2021 will be here before you know it, and I believe we’re going to dominate 2020.
